Shakespeare’s Globe West Block project involves the redevelopment of the exhibition spaces, administration areas, library and archive in the West Block, and will contribute to achieving the Globe’s objective for a more sustainable site.
The work is divided into two parts: the refurbishment of the existing basement and exhibition areas and new event space at entry level; and new-build construction from entry level upwards, including a new third floor.
Skelly & Couch’s servicing and plant strategy meets the highest standards of energy efficiency. Refurbished and new-build elements will be mechanically ventilated using Termodeck with additional heat/coolth being derived from an existing basement de-watering borehole installation. Areas of the new West Block building above ground will have operable windows/vent panels so that the mechanical ventilation can be supplemented with additional fresh air.
Skelly & Couch is working on the project with Southwark-based architects Allies and Morrison, the firm which recently designed the captivating Sam Wanamaker Playhouse indoor theatre, also located on the Globe site.
