Towers Junior School

This project was to provide a small extension to an existing primary school in the London Borough of Havering and remodel some of the central learning areas to create more interactive learning hearts.

The new extension works included a new main entrance with admin support, an ICT room and a new small hall/music room. The work also included the replacement of oil-fired boilers with new high-efficiency gas fired boilers, as well as an upgrade of all the main mechanical plant and electrical supply. The school was in operation during the construction period and therefore careful consideration was given to the phasing and sequencing of the works.

The new-build elements incorporated a number of sustainable features, including high levels of natural light, natural ventilation, excellent airtightness values, high levels of insulation, heat reclaim ventilation in serviced areas, efficient lighting and control and a simple building energy management system.

The project team was procured through the Office of Government (OGC) Framework. Skelly & Couch was appointed by EC Harris LLP to provided full M&E, environmental, sustainability, acoustic and co-ordination design services on the project. The project was procured at the same time as Elm Park, Hylands and Gidea Park Primary Schools (also for Havering), which were all tendered separately and amounted to a total construction value of around £20m.
