Director

Mark Maidment has a first-class Master's Degree from the University of Exeter. After graduating in 1999, he joined Max Fordham LLP, becoming a Partner in 2003. Mark left Max Fordham LLP in 2009 for Building Design Partnership (BDP), where he was responsible for a range of large-scale projects. He joined Skelly & Couch in 2010, becoming a Director in 2014.

Mark is currently leading environmental M&E services at the Design District in Greenwich, London’s first purpose-built district of 16 buildings designed for the creative industries; and two major residential developments in Abbey Wood and Maidenhead for developer HUB Group, among many other projects.

He has extensive experience across a variety of sectors and projects, including many listed buildings and heritage sites. His long-term work and relationship with Brighton College has seen him undertake three projects at the school, including the exemplar Science and Sport Centre, as well as the Civic Trust-commended new Music School which was built within a collection of Grade II-listed buildings and incorporated an extension to the listed dining hall.

Mark led on a recently completed sustainable new student accommodation block for 400-year-old Wadham College, Oxford, delivering 134-ensuite bedrooms around a courtyard garden. He also spearheaded environmental engineering on a series of projects in Covent Garden, London, including a contemporary renovation of the renowned Covent Garden Opera Terrace, comprising a restaurant at the top of the Grade II*-listed Market Building. Mark’s services design considered the elegant architectural features and requirements of both landlord and tenant to minimise interference to the fabric and historic features of the building. This sensitive consideration to the surrounding environment was achieved whilst still developing sustainable design concepts.

He is also Director in Charge of the Walwick Hall Hotel project in rural Northumberland in the Hadrian’s Wall Buffer Zone. The project involves the construction of pavilion spaces and luxury accommodation pods which will be used to provide a wedding venue and conference accommodation. Other notable, historic projects include the highly sustainable refurbishment of the much-admired, Grade II-listed Brutalist Preston Bus Station.

The highly successful Cambridge Central Mosque, which Mark led from the outset, stands as an exemplar of sustainable design achieving economic, environmental and social sustainability while being a stunning place of worship.

Mark was responsible for the ORTUS learning and events centre in Camberwell, south London, which won numerous awards, including a 2014 RIBA National prize, and led to Skelly & Couch winning the prestigious 2014 Association for Consultancy and Engineering Project Design Excellence Award (companies with up to 250 employees).

Mark’s background in construction and analytical education, coupled with a keen interest in good design, provide a fresh approach to building services, from setting a robust strategy to delivering detailed engineering solutions to meet clients’ objectives.
