Three Skelly & Couch projects shortlisted for 2017 RIBA South East Awards

Building environment and services engineers Skelly & Couch successfully contributed to no fewer than three projects presently shortlisted for the 2017 RIBA South East Awards. The awards hat trick was achieved from a shortlist of 14 projects across the region, which covers Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

The shortlisted buildings will be assessed by a regional jury with the winners announced at the RIBA South East Awards on 25 May at Ascot racecourse.

The three Skelly & Couch projects shortlisted for RIBA South East Awards are:

Command of the Oceans, The Historic Dockyard Chatham (Baynes and Mitchell Architects)
The repair and preservation of a range of The Historic Dockyard’s Scheduled Ancient Monuments and of the 18TH century HMS Namur archaeological find, The Ship’s Timbers. Significant energy savings have been achieved by removing the need to heat substantial parts of the buildings and through improvements to thermal insulation and renewal of building services systems.

Kingsdown House, The King’s School, Canterbury (Walters & Cohen Architects)
Refurbishment and new-build boarding accommodation at historic co-educational independent school. The new building was carefully designed to include the optimum combination of window area to provide daylight and to allow natural ventilation wherever possible, whilst minimising the heat loss from the building.

Brighton College Music School (Eric Parry Architects)
An exemplary new performing arts hub at top-rated independent school. An analysis of energy strategy options led to the implementation of an open loop borehole installation designed to serve this development and future new buildings on the site. Winner of a 2017 Civic Trust Commendation Award.

National RIBA Award winners will be announced in July Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Over the past decade, Skelly & Couch projects have won many architectural and sustainability awards, including the prestigious Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) Building Services Excellence Award in 2014 and 2015. The dynamic firm has been named one of the construction industry’s top 50 employers in Building magazine’s Good Employer Guide for two years running, in 2015 and 2016.
