Matfen Hall, a 19th century, Grade II*-listed stately home in Northumberland, operates as a five-star independent hotel with 53 bedrooms, a spa and a golf course with clubhouse. 

Skelly & Couch have been continuously involved since 2020 in a rolling series of upgrades and enhancements for refurbishment, in addition to developing an energy masterplan for the site, which includes a proposed new, upgraded health club and spa facility, as well as improvements to the golf clubhouse.

The building has remained open throughout the refurbishment works and Skelly & Couch have worked to ensure continuity of service while the kitchens have been relocated and upgraded; heritage rooms have been sensitively restored; electrical services have been modernised; and bedrooms refurbished.

Skelly & Couch are involved in proposals to transform the hotel into one of the most sustainable destination hotels in the UK. Our proposals consider the building listing, the visitor experience, and the heritage value of the existing building, as well as the marketing potential. We also take into account the plan for the future wellness spa and golf club development proposals, while delivering a phased approach to allow the building to continue operating throughout the upgrade works.
