Preston Bus Station and Youth Zone

Preston Bus Station, designed originally by BDP and completed in 1969, is a renowned, Grade II-listed Brutalist building, which Skelly & Couch is helping to return to its former glory through modern technologies and sensitive refurbishment techniques.

The project, for which Skelly & Couch has carried out full environmental design, will enhance the functionality and use of the bus station concourse. Reinforcing the high civic quality of the project, planned in consultation with the Twentieth Century Society and Heritage England, it will replace the under-used bus parking expanse with a new public realm providing an important link to the rest of the city.

Skelly & Couch’s M&E solutions for the Listed building concourse will provide servicing for a modern bus station with new electrical services and a lighting design based on the original, made possible by the advances in LED technology and controls. The lighting design will highlight and enhance the iconic building’s dramatic architectural heritage.

The adjacent, 2,600 sqm Youth Zone, with a pavilion-like, dynamic design featuring a glazed façade and colonnade, will contain social areas, a sports hall, climbing wall, café, education/training facilities, music and performance spaces and a kick pitch. Skelly & Couch is implementing an efficient and robust servicing strategy to meet the challenging technical requirements of the standalone structure.

Air source heat pump technology will generate efficient base load heating and cooling to all parts of the new building. Boosted natural ventilation has been introduced wherever possible to reduce energy use and provide an intuitive and comfortable environment.
